Delete your CommuniChess account

How to delete your account and everything attached to it, what we keep, and for how long.

Last updated: 22 August 2026

Delete it from inside the app

In CommuniChess, open your Profile, tap Manage Account, and scroll to Danger Zone. Tap Delete Account, type your username to confirm, and confirm again. That is all — there is no waiting period and no approval step.

If you are already signed in, go straight to Manage Account.

If you cannot sign in

Email support@communichess.com from the email address on the account, with the subject “Delete my account”, and include your CommuniChess username. We will verify that the request comes from the account holder and delete the account within 30 days, usually much sooner. We will confirm by email when it is done.

We ask you to write from the account's own email address because that is how we confirm the request is really yours — we will not delete someone else's account on an unverified request.

What gets deleted

Deleting your account permanently removes:

  • Your account and sign-in — username, email address, profile picture and password, including the copy held by our authentication provider, Clerk.
  • Your profile location — the coordinates and city used for matchmaking.
  • Every post you have written, and every photo you have uploaded (deleted from Cloudflare R2 storage, not just hidden).
  • Every game you shared to the community feed.
  • Your friendships and any pending friend requests.
  • Your blocks, and any reports you filed about other people.
  • Your settings — language, rating range and board preferences.
  • Your Lichess connection. Your access token is revoked at Lichess, so CommuniChess loses all access to your Lichess account.

Deletion is immediate and permanent. We cannot restore a deleted account, and the username is released for anyone to take.

What we keep, and for how long

  • Records of games you played — the Lichess game ID, the Lichess usernames, the time control and the result. These are kept indefinitely because they are part of the other player's history too. Your CommuniChess account is unlinked from them, so they no longer point back to you.
  • Events you submitted to the public chess calendar stay published, with your name removed. Email us if you want an event taken down as well.
  • Backups — our database is backed up by our hosting provider. Deleted data can persist in those backups for up to 30 days before the backups roll over, after which it is gone. We do not restore deleted accounts from backups.
  • Server logs containing your username may persist for a few days before the hosting platform rotates them out.
  • Abuse reports other people filed about you are kept for up to 12 months, detached from your account. Your username is retained on the report so it stays meaningful; nothing else about you is. We keep these deliberately — otherwise deleting an account would erase its abuse record, and anyone could clear theirs by signing up again.
  • Where the law otherwise requires us to keep a record, we keep the minimum needed, for no longer than 12 months.

Your Lichess account is not deleted

CommuniChess plays your games on Lichess. Deleting your CommuniChess account revokes our access to Lichess but does not touch your Lichess account, your Lichess games, your rating or any chat you sent in a Lichess game. To delete those, use Lichess's own account deletion page.

Just want to disconnect, not delete?

If you only want to stop sharing location, remove a post, or unblock someone, you do not need to delete your account — location and board settings are in Settings, and unblocking is in Manage Account. Email support@communichess.com if you are unsure which one you need.
